Welcome to
Stanislaus County

History of Stanislaus County/Modesto

Modesto is located near the center of the state in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley. With one of the world's largest canneries, the area is full of vineyards and orchards. West of the valley over the coastal mountains lies the San Francisco bay area. To the east are the foothills where the Mother Lode gold country changed the course of the west. Restored Gold Rush towns are within an hour's drive. Beyond is the Sierra Nevada mountain range and Yosemite National Park.

The covered bridge at Knights Ferry is seen here. Knights Ferry is a gold rush town at the edge of the Stanislaus County along the Stanislaus River.

Modesto experiences four distinct seasons, but not the traditional ones known to eastern United States. Spring begins in February as fruit and nut trees bloom like bouquets in orchards across the Valley. Annual seeds and seedlings can safely be started for summer flowers and vegetables during March and April. Balmy weather, with temperatures averaging in the 80's, interrupted by occasional refreshing rains, continue through June.

July and August have average temperatures in the 90's.However the humidity remains low. Cool mornings and evenings, an almost ever present cooling breeze from the Delta and an abundance of shade trees along the city streets and neighborhoods make for pleasant summer living.

During late September the trees begin to show the fall colors of gold, russet, and orange. Daytime temperatures remain in the 70's and 80's, but you'll need to take a light jacket when you go out in the evenings. Tennis and golf can be played year round.

December and January are winter. Most of the year's rainfall is expected during these months with average temperatures in the mid thirties. Ground fog, known as Tule Fog, is often present in the dark hours, but usually burns off during the morning. Freezing temperatures are rare and snow is non-existent except on the distant mountain peaks of the Sierras.

McHenry Mansion; built in 1883 by Robert McHenry, a prominent local rancher and banker, the mansion is a fine example of the Victorian Italianate style of architecture.
